内容記述 | This report presents the results of the research conducted during the final year of the Research Project on “An International Comparative Analysis of Household Consumption and Saving Behavior” of the Asian Growth Research Institute (October 1, 2014, to March 31, 2016). The objective of this project was to conduct an international comparative analysis of household consumption and saving behavior and to shed light on differences and similarities among countries in their household consumption and saving behavior. This report consists of 2 chapters. In Chapter 1, we conduct an econometric analysis of the determinants of household saving rates in India and Korea using long-term time series data and find that the age structure of the population, the sex ratio, the level of income, and corporate saving have a significant impact on the household saving rate. During the first 6 months of this project, we conducted an international comparison of bequest motives in order to deepen our understanding of household consumption and saving behavior and found that bequests are selfishly motivated in Japan. In Chapter 2, we examine whether or not the receipt of inter vivos transfers or financial assistance from parents influences the degree of burden of parental care provision that children feel using subjective well-being measurements based on Japanese data. We find a negative impact of parental caregiving on the subjective well-being of child caregivers in the case of unmarried children, but such an adverse effect is found to be attenuated if the children have received inter vivos transfers or financial assistance from their parents. This suggests that parents save pursuant to a strategic bequest motive and that parent-child relations are governed by an exchange motive. We are grateful to the Asian Growth Research Institute for its financial support of this research. Furthermore, Chapter 2 uses micro data from the Preference Parameters Study of Osaka University’s 21st Century COE Program ‘Behavioral Macrodynamics Based on Surveys and Experiments’ and its Global COE Project ‘Human Behavior and Socioeconomic Dynamics.’ We acknowledge the program/project’s contributors: Yoshiro Tsutsui, Fumio Ohtake, and Shinsuke Ikeda. |
